News

27/06/2017

It’s that time again Shugafam…

Another MTV Breaks X MTV Shuga collaboration has reached that all important stage where the chosen few have been selected. This time round, we teamed up with MTV Breaks to look for the best illustrators Mzansi has to offer, as we prepare for our brand new comic book for #MTVShugaDS.

To enter, illustrators had to send in a drawing of their favourite MTV Shuga: Down South character, which was then judged by our panel of experts. The judges received a wave of amazing entries, with each submission demonstrating their unique take on the MTV Shuga cast. Yet, we could only pick six winners, and after a long and hard process, the judges made their tough decision.Check out our winners below and see what the judges had to say about them:

***Phile Mazibuko (@mazi_artsa) has replaced Monde Mabaso (@mr_highart).
@mazi_artsa
Great depiction of the longest-running MTV Shuga star, Nick Mutuma.

@Ozmik
A beautiful illustration that shows great creativity, and a unique and interesting style. Awesome colour choices and painting techniques too! I would definitely love to see a comic in this style.

@brandt.colin
I can definitely see this type of illustration in a comic book. The creator shows a good understanding of stylizing comic style characters, painting and lighting.

@VeneziaFanner
This has an own-able style, will extend well into a low-fizine/comic book. Unique use of color & refined line-work. I think this style is different to most of the other work I have seen.

@Petichlife
This character has not just been traced in Adobe Illustrator (like many of the other entries) but has been drawn from scratch. I enjoy the strength and boldness displayed in the body language and facial expression.

@Kaya_X_Art
Has demonstrated a great skill set, as well as an excellent use of colour, which is integral to any quality comic book.

The winners will now join the ShugaCrew and be mentored by Loyiso Mkhize, a leading SA illustrator, as we prepare to launch our brand new comic book.
