It’s official! MTV Shuga is coming back Down South and you can be in it!
On Wednesday the 25th of July, MTV Shuga, in partnership with Unitaid and the London School of Health and Tropical Medicines, announced the return of MTV Shuga: Down South to South Africa (along with two brand new seasons in Cote d’Ivoire).
As if this wasn’t exciting enough, we then revealed that we would be Opening the Industry in South Africa once again with the 2018 MTV Shuga Auditions.
Young South Africans will have the opportunity to audition for a role in the upcoming season of #MTVShugaDS and this time we are taking our search further than ever. Not only will we hold open auditions in two different cities, but we’ll also be giving this year’s hopefuls the chance to audition online throughout the month of August.
There’s plenty to be excited about, but we noticed that lots of young actors in the Shugafam have a lot of questions so we decided to put this blog together to answer a few of them.
Who can audition for MTV Shuga?
The #MTVShugaAudition is open to all South African residents between the ages of 18-25 years.
When and where are auditions taking place?
For the first time ever, MTV Shuga Auditions will be taking place in TWO South African cities: Johannesburg and Durban.
Johannesburg – 25 August 2018
The Joburg leg of the auditions will be held at Zone 6 the Venue in Soweto on Saturday the 25th of August.
Durban – 26 August 2018
One day later, we’ll be flying to Dubane for the second leg of the public auditions to be held at the Olive Convention Center in North Beach.

If I can’t make it to Joburg and Durban, can I still audition?
Similar to previous years, MTV Shuga will be hosting live public auditions as well as online public auditions throughout the month of August. We will be announcing the dates and details for online auditions in the coming weeks.
Do I need to prepare my own lines?
No. MTV Shuga will be sharing a script for male and female characters.
Tip: if you are attending the live public auditions, it could turn out that there are more male auditionees than female auditionees (or vice versa) and that would mean you have to audition using a script you might not have been prepared to recite. To prepare for this possibility, we would advise you read and familiarise yourself with both roles.
What do I need to bring?
- Your ID
- Refreshments and snacks
- A photo of yourself (Not mandatory but always useful to have)
- A positive attitude
How much does it cost to audition?
A grand total of ZERO South African Rands and zero cents. In other words – it’s completely free!
MTV Shuga will never charge you to audition. If anybody is trying to convince you to pay money in order to be on our show, please report them to @MTVShuga on social media or email info@MTVShuga.com
