Dear Shugafam,
It has been weeks and weeks of blended emotions. Doesn’t it just feel like the universe’s reset button is broken? We all need air.
This period began as some sort of unpleasant cycle which I forcefully learned to break out of. I am more intentional about keeping my mental health in check. I have discovered that if I slow down to look closely enough, I would see some good in grim situations.
Instead of worrying about the things that I have no control over, I choose to hold on to light, twirl and dance until my feet hurt.
Music.
Special recognition to MTV Shuga for blessing us with the coolest songs over the years. Music has always been a special part of the show. Shout out to Faa, Khalil, Bongi and the other characters for expressing themselves and showing us that music is a safe escape. We often underestimate how much power it wields. Music transcends everything.
For a woman who is terrible at moving to beats and rhythm, dancing has become my drug since the lockdown began. You should try it sometime.
On second thoughts, I think you should give it a go right now!
Here’s a playlist of some of my favourite songs, a mix of genres I have laughed and grooved to in the past weeks.
So, at this moment in time, dance with me.
Close your eyes, be whoever you want and let yourself go.
