MTV Shuga is all about opening up the industry and giving opportunities to as many talented people as possible. If you’ve been following the MTV Shuga Journey over the past few weeks you will have seen that we announced the show’s return to South Africa for another season of MTV Shuga: Down South - and ever since then we’ve been determined to give opportunities to as many young people in Mzansi as possible.

The last time MTV Shuga: Down South was in town, we opened our doors to photographers, filmmakers and illustrators for a number of opportunities and we are excited to do the same once again this year.

#MTVShugaBreaks is Back!

This time around we are looking for an exciting, young director who not only possesses the talent to work with our industry-leading production team, but also shares the values of MTV Shuga.

The winning director will eventually get the opportunity to direct a scene from the upcoming season of MTV Shuga: Down South but that’s not all. MTV Shuga airs in over 720 million homes around the world (and that’s just television, don’t forget that MTV Shuga is also streamed by hundreds of thousands of people online too!) which means that your work will be appreciated by a global audience for years to come!

ICYMI: The last time MTV Shuga teamed up with MTV Breaks, we found some of the coolest young illustrators in South Africa to design our MTV Shuga: Comic Book.

The value of working on MTV Shuga

Beyond the prize that’s on offer, you’ll also have the opportunity to network with the entire MTV #Shugafam. From this year’s cast (some of whom will have come through the #MTVShugaAudition!) to some of the biggest directors and producers in the country, you will be well placed to elevate your skills and take the next big step in your career.

Are you sold yet? If you still need convincing just remember that the last season of MTV Shuga: Down South won an award for “Best Youth Program - TV Non-Fiction” at the 2018 South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs). This means that not only will your work gain global exposure, but you will get to say that you are working on an award-winning television program too!

What kind of director are we looking for?

If you are a young, vibrant and creative director who lives and breaths film and television, then we are already interested in hearing from you. The ideal #MTVShugaBreaks winner will be someone who is not only skilled but curious and eager to take their production abilities to the next level.

If you take well to mentorship and aren’t afraid to show your creativity on the big stage, then this is an opportunity you need to make the most of!

Okay, I’m hooked - how do I enter?

If you are a young director between the ages of 18-25 then all you need to do is send us a video of something you have produced in the past, whether it’s a film, television episode, music video or any other production. The video can be professionally shot, or it can be something you put together with your smartphone.

Once you’ve got the perfect video, share it with the MTV Shuga and MTV Breaks one of two ways:

Be warned: The competition ends on the 5th of October 2018 at 17:00 CAT - so make sure you submit your video before then!

Anything else I need to know?
