MTV Shuga Naija unveiled the cast for the brand new season this week and it features a host of new and familiar faces!
We’ve been patiently waiting for a peep into the cast for the brand new #MTVShugaNaija ever since the last hopeful actor walked into the judges’ room at this year’s MTV Shuga Naija auditions back in April. The team has done a good job of keeping tight-lipped about potential recruits and comebacks all the way until this week Tuesday when the 2019 cast was finally unveiled in front of fans, media and partners at a press event in Lagos.
We were in suspense the entire morning of the 23rd of July as we patiently waited to find out which of our faves would be coming back, and which major actors were joining our production. Perhaps most exciting, we really wanted to know which undiscovered talents had aced their auditions and managed to convince the judges and producers that they had what it takes to join the cast for our fourth instalment of MTV Shuga Naija. Our wait came to an end just after 11 am when a press conference kicked off at the Sojourner by Genesis Hotel in G.R.A and, one by one, cast members were named and took their positions at the front of the room.
Let’s start with some of the most exciting news:
Which big names are joining #MTVShugaNaija?
All the headlines right now are revolving around the inclusion of Richard Mofe-Damijo and Osas Ighodaro, two of Nollywood’s biggest acting talents who will be bringing their star power to one of Africa’s most popular television productions. Another major name to join our cast is the legendary Funsho Adeolu, who will be bringing a wealth of experience to an exciting cast. Big Brother 2018 star Tobi Bakre is an eclectic addition while Omowunmi Dada and Belinda Yanga will be injecting some youth to the cast.
Which familiar faces are coming back for the fourth season?
Timini Egbuson, AKA Tobi is back for his FOURTH season of #MTVShugaNaija and in doing so he becomes the #Shugafam’s current longest serving actor. Along with him, Funlola Raimi Aofiyebi, Rahama Sadau, Yakubu Mohammed, Bukola Oladipupo, Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Amal Umar, Alvin Abayomi, Helena Nelson and Ruby Akabueze will all be making their way back into this year’s storyline as well as a few other friends and frenemies from the previous season of #MTVShugaNaija.
Who made it through the auditions?
Omozele Gabriel is one of the most exciting additions to this season’s cast and has landed the role of Maryam in the upcoming season. She came through the Auditions and will be looking to make a strong impression with her stint on this show.
What is everybody saying?
Timini couldn’t hide his excitement at the prospect of returning to MTV Shuga Naija for his fourth straight season. The actor, who plays the divisive character, Tobi, spoke about the upcoming season in a statement and said,
“I am so excited to be back on MTV Shuga Naija. I couldn’t be prouder to be such an integral part of this conversation, helping to educate young people on effective ways to manage pressure from society, and to make informed decisions about their sexual health. This is my fourth series of MTV Shuga, and not only have I learnt so much from being involved, but I’m sure that our fans have grown with us too. MTV Shuga Naija continues to make a positive change in Nigeria, and I’m thrilled to be back on set again and to meet the new cast”.
Meanwhile, Executive Director of the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, Georgia Arnold beamed with delight as she welcomed the MTV Shuga franchise’s 8th season across all territories:
“The new series of MTV Shuga Naija has so many stories to tell: we’ll see characters dealing with family planning, contraception, and gender based violence among other issues – all of which are so relevant to our audience. The cast of the series are such an integral part of the work of MTV Shuga – they are not only (brilliant) actors, but actors and ambassadors who work so hard to ensure that our messages are reaching and positively impacting young Nigerians across the country.”
Returning producer, Tope Oshin raised the bar to dizzying heights with the last season of #MTVShugaNaija but she feels as if this upcoming season will take the story even further. She also shared her thoughts with the press in a press release:
“I’m elated to be producing the new season of MTV Shuga… We have so many issues in the world and while we entertain our audience, we also talk about serious issues raised in our communities. MTV Shuga is entertaining, witty and fun but also effects change within communities and inspires the next generation of young people to serve the world better.”
And now the countdown is on. The 4th instalment of MTV Shuga Naija will be hitting television screens in September 2019 and we are literally shaking with excitement!
