We’ve had Shuga premier in Lagos, London and now the University of the Western Cape are hosting a special community screening of Shuga in South Africa.

With less glitz and glam of the previous premiers, the screening will take place at the Eerste River Multi-Purpose Centre, a community outside of Cape Town that has been deeply challenged by HIV and other social problems. For the past two years, Shuga has been used as a community transformation and empowerment tool by the University.

The screening will be attended by Reverend Thabo Makgoba, Archbishop of Cape Town, Georgia Arnold, Executive Director of the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, Prof. Brian O’Connell, Rector & Vice Chancellor, University of the Western Cape, James Maloney, South Africa representative for PEPFAR, Dr. James Lees from UWC and various national and international stakeholders working to change the course of the HIV epidemic.

Nigerian actor and musician Ikubese Emmanuel Ifeanyichukwu, who plays the troubled character Femi will be speaking at the screening, while MTV Base VJ Sizwe Dhlomo will act as MC.

Guests will be treated to a spit braai followed by a screening of the first 3 episodes of Season 3 of Shuga, which is currently airing on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) every Sunday at 21:00 CAT.
