Been there. Done that. Got the T-shirt.
So why is MTV Shuga returning to Nigeria for another season? Good question… After a season Down South, we’re coming back to Naija for what will be an explosive season.
Coming back to familiar territory can be strange. Time passes and people change, but some things always stay the same. After two lit seasons in Nigeria, there’s a lot to look forward to as MTV Shuga plunges back into West Africa. As if it wasn’t obvious, Nigeria has got it going ON! For those wondering why MTV Shuga is coming back, check out our certified, undisputed, top ten list of why we’re hitting the streets of Naija once more…
1. Dope Beats:
Nigeria has some of the WORLD’S best musicians, singers and producers. It has taken many in the world a long time to realise that the Continent has always created some of the best music around. Nigeria has been one of the shining lights when it comes to the music scene, with artists such as Tiwa Savage, Wizkid, Patoranking, Yemi Alade, Falz, Seyi Shay and Simi leading the charge.
2. Top Talent:
Blessed with some of the best actors the Continent has to offer, Nigeria’s acting game is way strong, with Nollywood doing bits all over the world. With such a hot selection of talent to choose from, MTV Shuga’s cast is destined to be one of our strongest yet. Watch this space to see who else joins the Shugafam, following our announcement that Timini Egbuson, Jemima Osunde and Sharon Ezeamaka have all returned for another season of Shugalove.
3. Unfinished Business:
Nigeria’s population currently stands at 182 million people. Yet, contraception use amongst young people remains low with just 11% of women between the ages of 15-49 years old using contraceptive methods. Unplanned pregnancies are high, and there are 1.3 million unintended pregnancies taking place every year amongst young women. The need to protect our sexual and reproductive health is as real here as it is anywhere else.
4. The Show Must Go On:
Tobi has gone from Lagos sweetheart to the resident bad boy, and eventually ended up proving himself to be a good friend to Femi. The last time we saw Leila, she had patched up her teenage romance with Weki, following some tough times between the young couple. Princess had given birth to an adorable baby boy, in what ended up being one of the most dramatic MTV Shuga endings ever. What’s next for the returning trio?! We’re desperate to find out. With the first ever MTV Shuga birth taking place in Lagos, we had to go back and check up on our young gun.
5. The Vibe:
Nigeria is HECTIC. The country that never sleeps, Naija is alive with people, cars (more like traffic) and parties. Good vibes are central to the Nigerian way of life, and we can’t wait to get knee-deep in all the action.
6. Swag on Fleeek:
When it comes to fashion, Nigerians know how to dress. And dress well at that. Setting the standard for fashion all across the world, we’re touching down in Naija to discover the latest fashion trends of 2018.
7. The Food:
Running a whole series of MTV Shuga can build up quite the appetite. Taking in some of the country’s famed Jollof rice (no disrespect Ghanaian fam), or a bit of suya from one of Naija’s many street food stalls, is a sure fire way to keep our bellies feeling full.
8. Hot Cameos:
Our two seasons in Naija sourced some of the hottest talent Nigeria had to offer. Patoranking, Wizkid, Ice Prince and Banky W all came through and showed love to the Shugafam, either during the series itself or On Tour with MTV Shuga.
9. Sexual Health
Following SA, Nigeria has the second highest number of people living with HIV. Approximately 3.2 million people are living with HIV in Naija, with 80% of heterosexual sex accounting for new infections. This shows how our work in Nigeria is as important today as it has ever been, and we’re back to remind people why safe sex is the best sex. PERIOD.
10. Uncharted Territory
Previous seasons of MTV Shuga were predominantly set in the bustling city of Lagos. Yet, like all countries, there is more to Nigeria than just one neighbourhood, and this season will be venturing further up North to scope out what’s going down with our Northern Shugafam. Get set for a real-life look at Nigeria as a whole. We, for one, CANNOT wait.
So there you have it! MTV Shuga is back and we couldn’t be anymore excited.
