MTV Shuga Naija: Episode 1 Recap

#MTVShugaNaija is back and it feels so good to see familiar faces as well as some pretty new ones too!

Episode 1 was better than I imagined it would be and it was definitely heavy with lessons. Asides keeping us entertained, the aim of MTV Shuga is to keep young people informed about certain important topics. The first episode addresses a number of sensitive issues such as contraception, family planning, teenage motherhood, bullying and transactional sex. We can admit that we find it so difficult to discuss these things in our homes and even at school. Episode 2 airs on MTV Base and YouTube this week, so here’s a quick recap of everything that went down in Episode 1

So, you guys remember Princess from our previous seasons of #MTVShugaNaija, right? Well, her baby is six months old now and do you know the best part? He’s HIV negative! That’s such a relief. So many people are not aware that an HIV positive mother can give birth to an HIV free child without complications if they both take their medication correctly (Read more about this here). We are happy for Princess, however, she still has so much to figure out.

Tobi’s new character truly reflects MTV Shuga’s hashtag #NothingStaysTheSame. Boy, that switch was so unexpected! Tobi is now a bad guy, what Nigerians call a ‘Yoruba demon’. He’s a successful man now, and he’s using his status to take advantage of people. Not cool, Tobi. Meanwhile, another returning star, Leila seems to have fallen for the wrong guy and she’s going out of her way to show her feelings for him.

We also have a few new faces including Faa, a young lady who will do whatever it takes to get to top. She’s burdened with family duties and has sadly started making wrong decisions to advance her career. Faa is one to look out for in this new season, I can feel a little drama brewing!

Hadiza is another interesting new face. She is a teenage mom who seems rather lost and is definitely running from something. We expect to learn more about her situation in the upcoming episodes. We also met Diana, the school bully and queen bee, who is going all out to explore something that may be too hot for her handle. She’s close friends with Cynthia and Frances who are also her classmates.

How can we forget the amazing Corper Yasmin, who is doing her all she can to make sex education in schools a not-so foreign subject? She has a mutual understanding with her husband, Mahmud, not to have any kids until they are both ready and somehow, she found a way to use her experience in family planning to educate her students. I was particularly impressed with the way she handled her class. I hope more schools take a cue from this.

If you still haven’t had a chance to watch #MTVShugaNaija Episode 1, you can stream it all right here:

We’re looking forward to seeing a whole new episode of #MTVShugaNaija which would be showing on Tuesday night on MTV Base West at 21:30 WAT, and at 23:00 WAT on YouTube on Wednesday. See you in the comments
