Last night, the crème da la crème of A-list stars graced the red carpet for the 2016 Annual Golden Globes Awards in Hollywood. The ceremony that honors the best in American film and TV kicks off the 2016 award season.
More and more we’re seeing British actors make the move across the pond to pick up these awards and make a name for themselves.
Last month, MTV Shuga caught up with some upcoming young British talent at the Screen Nation Awards in London, which celebrates black talent in film, TV and media.
We wanted to find out whether actors could achieve a high level of success in their home countries without having to head to the USA.
When asked if young up and coming actors in the UK could obtain the level of success of John Boyega or Idris Elba without going to America, Percelle Ascott and Joivan Wade from Man Dem on the Wall, thought 100 percent. “Young actors are being recognized more in the UK now, and then they’re being brought over to the states, you don’t have to live in America to get that exposure,” said Wade.
“Social Media is helping create a platform for young actors. They can showcase their stuff online and be recognized internationally, “said Ascott.
Isaac Asha Tomiczek, Director and writer said, “If you want to be on network TV show you’ve got to go to America. If you want to be a stage actor, you can stay in the UK; we produce the best stage actors in the world. John Boyega was a stage actor before he did Star Wars.”
Comedian Eddie Kaddi, believes “there is more life to life than just America, people are forgetting Africa exists, when you go to Africa as black person you’re mainstream, and a lot of people are living fantastic lives – Basketmouth, Funny Face, and of course it goes beyond with the musicians like Wiz Kid, Wande Coal, Iyanya – these guys are living amazing lifestyles in Africa. Everyone keeps watching America, but go to Africa.”
