If you thought Christmas and New Year’s eve were all you had to look forward to for the remaining few weeks of 2013, think again – in fact think sex, lies, love, and more sex as Shuga series 3 finally lands.

Shuga captures the diversity of Lagos in a way never before seen.  Be warned, if you are watching with your partner there could be a few awkward silences throughout the first couple of episodes, as there is nowhere this series doesn’t go and no secret it doesn’t reveal. Excited much? You should be and you will not be disappointed. Especially as the series is accompanied by a chart topping soundtrack that includes the title track ‘Sweet Like Shuga’ written and performed by Flavour, Sound Sultan, Chidinma, Kcee,Professor and Del B.

Highlights of the upcoming episodes, firstly the return of Shuga 2’s lothario Femi (hardcore fans won’t forget his sexual encounter with his best friend, Leo’s long term girlfriend Dala, which resulted in four of the characters testing themselves for HIV). Femi appears to have changed his ways as he arrives on the scene as a popular big time club promoter but along with his luggage it seems he is brought along two potentially life changing secrets . You’ll have to stay glued to see how this pans out.

Shuga wouldn’t be so sweet without its hard-hitting storylines and Femi is not the only character in Lagos with something to hide. His old school friend Ekene is an ambitious music promoter who has a lot to prove – not just to his DJ girlfriend Foye, who may not be as innocent as she appears.

One of the most interesting storylines throughout the series involves mercenary student Sophie who is best friends with Foye. With her determined little sister Princess showing up in town from the village, Sophie must handle being a good role model, a loyal friend, a worthwhile student , and most importantly to her, staying successful at maintaining her lavish lifestyle provided by her sugar daddies. In the series we find out if it is safe for her to be a naïve runs girl when ruthless businessmen prefer sleeping with girls without condoms. For the characters of Shuga, the threat of HIV looms above them, as they tackle the daily trials of young life.

This series definitely has a character or situation that all of us can relate to. Friends of the key characters, students David and Tobi make for a great combination and provide some light hearted relief whereas young married couple Nii and Malaika highlight important issues surrounding intense relationships at such a young age. Their storyline will definitely tug at the heart strings.

Last but definitely not least we get to see Tiwa Savages’s acting debut as the tough-cookie nightclub owner,Sade, who not only has to keep her nightclub, Badoo, the baddest joint in town but has another project to handle in the shape of her young son Weki . Ice Prince and Iyanya round up the celebrity cameos in a series that may well be the best TV show to come out of Africa.
